Lumidigm V-Series fingerprint sensor is embedded in the new Rhino Touch from Innometriks

Introducing at ISC West, Innometriks Booth #22126

ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO — April 2, 2013 — Lumidigm today announced that Innometriks has embedded Lumidigm’s V-Series multispectral fingerprint sensors into its new Rhino Touch reader that will be introduced at the ISC West show, Booth 22126 in the Sands Convention Center in Las Vegas, April 10-12. The new Rhino Touch can be deployed as a self-service CAC/TWIC/PIV identification validation device that provides self-guided and fully-authenticated enrollment into a facility access control system via a CAC, TWIC or PIV card. As such, the new Rhino Touch can be a vetting station that provides complete validation of a CAC, TWIC or PIV credential — contact, contactless or magnetic stripe — including all card signatures, certificates and personal information.

Up until now, a trained operator was required to complete this task. The Rhino Touch brings together a comprehensive blend of technologies along with an intuitive user interface. Now, organizations can complete the validation in a self-service format, reducing labor costs and increasing ROI, while maintaining the chain of trust throughout the process.

“The market has been looking for a way to be more efficient at vetting these complex credentials,” explains John Cassise, Innometriks CEO. “The unique ability of Lumidigm’s sensors to get a great image of the finger the first time, every time is critical for making a truly intuitive biometric device.”

A large seven-inch touchscreen provides a kiosk-level user interface to simplify instruction and minimize a user’s learning curve. Expanding on many key features of the successful Rhino reader, the Rhino Touch can be wall-mounted, used on a desktop or positioned on a free-standing post.

“We’re excited to provide Innometriks’ new Rhino Touch with a solution that conventional fingerprint technologies simply cannot deliver,” adds Bill Spence, Lumidigm vice president for North America, Europe and Australia. “Lumidigm’s ability to get a great fingerprint image every time, regardless of the conditions, has significantly expanded the range of applications and environments where biometrics can be successfully deployed and scaled in the real world.”

About Innometriks

Innometriks develops and manufactures a suite of hardware and software products that provide strong identity authentication for mission critical environments.
Alfapass now enrolling 17,000 truck drivers and 10,000 longshoremen at the two ports on the new system

Needed More Secure and Intuitive Solution than Previous Biometric Could Deliver

ALBUQUERQUE, NM — March 27, 2013 — Lumidigm today announced that Alfapass, the provider of the security smart card system at the Ports of Antwerp and Zeebrugge in Belgium, is replacing the older biometric system at the ports’ registration stations with Lumidigm V-Series multispectral imaging fingerprint readers. The Port of Antwerp is Europe’s second largest port, while Zeebrugge is the central port for Europe’s automotive industry and has the largest liquefied natural gas terminal complex in Europe. Alfapass is now in the process of enrolling 17,000 truck drivers and 10,000 longshoremen at the two ports on the new system.

A major access control function at the port facilities is the unique identification of individuals in a more efficient manner, especially for those who travel between multiple port facilities. The solution is a single ID card that covers all facilities rather than a different entrance card for each company at the port. Therefore, visitors to both Belgian ports carry a smart card from Alfapass which includes the visitor’s biometric template. When reading the card, each individual facility has the option of also verifying the fingerprint stored on the card. By checking and verifying the fingerprint, facility personnel can assure that the card is being presented by its rightful owner.

“We have been using biometrics since 2005 but we needed a better solution to provide increased security that is easier for port visitors to use,” explains Piet Hadermann, Alfapass operations manager. “Our former technology could not differentiate one person from another at the level of certainty and security we require. The false acceptance rate was much too high. Plus, some people, especially infrequent visitors, would forget how to use it from visit to visit. With the Lumidigm units, visitors intuitively put their fingers on the illuminated blue light, even when using self-service units.”

All port visitors are now being enrolled — from longshoremen to ship’s chaplains — with the Lumidigm fingerprint readers. The biometric readers are placed and used at port registration offices and administrative kiosks located at the “gate in” for truck drivers and elsewhere an Alfapass card can be used. Alfapass enrolls user cards with two fingerprints, assuring that if there is a problem with the primary finger, the user can simply sign in with the alternate finger. The kiosk or access control device can also ask for the second finger.

Using the Alfapass system, when a card is lost or stolen, or the person no longer works for the company, the card is automatically blocked at all participating facilities. No longer can the ex-employee or person who stole or found the card get into the ports. Only card holders that also pass the biometric check-in are able to enter. Fraud is virtually impossible.

About Alfapass

Alfapass is a Belgian company, created in 2004 as a result of ISPS regulations. Alfapass is responsible for the issue and management of a central identification card, granting access to the Ports of Antwerp and Zeebrugge.

Today, the Alfapass Card Management System, a custom-built and highly automated solution, serves a total of more than 5,000 clients. Alfapass Cards are based on RFID technology. Each card is tailored to personal requirements using a specific card type, enabling the card holder to be identified immediately by their qualification and the nature of their profession (e.g., truck driver, dockworker, ship repairman, port installations personnel, visitor, etc.) The system also uses biometric enrollment allowing each card holder to be uniquely identified in all subsequent security and/or logistical processes at the port terminals.

The authority to allow discounts, returns, and gift card purchases often rests with a retail manager. But is the manager always present at the register when transaction restrictions are overridden? Possession of a card or key — or knowledge of a password — does not assure identity. This is the loophole that allows employee theft.

Only a biometric can establish who is present for a transaction. Modern point of sale (POS) applications include fingerprint authentication to ensure that only authorized people are approving transactions.

Multispectral imaging biometrics offer further benefits to the retail industry. Convenient and reliable fingerprint sensors from Lumidigm work on everyone, save time, streamline transactions, and provide a clean transaction record — all benefits that contribute to your bottom line.

Who rang up that sale? Now you know for sure.

Whoever has the key is authorized to drive the vehicle… right?

Today, whoever’s fingerprint is recognized by the vehicle is authorized to drive… and so much more. With biometrics, the driving experience can be conveniently and reliably tailored to each individual’s preferences. Mirror and seat position, climate control and radio station, even engine performance — all can be automatically adjusted with the touch of a finger.

Permissions can also be graded. A car owner might have unlimited access to all the features and capabilities of a vehicle, but a teenaged driver in the same family might encounter speed restrictions and a valet might trigger SMS alerts when he drives beyond a certain radius.

Fingerprint authentication is also the key the connected vehicle. Today, drivers and passengers can authorize financial transactions at parking structures, download media content, and place phone calls from their vehicles. All of this is possible when the vehicle recognizes the driver with multispectral imaging biometrics.

Fleet managers have turned to telematics systems to manage their mobile assets. Today, they can track anything and everything about their fleet vehicles, including the last time the oil was changed, real-time information about the RPM, and the status of a particular engine in a particular vehicle.

What they don’t always know is who is in control of the asset. They don’t know who is driving it or who is servicing that particular piece of machinery. Biometrics is the logical solution but the transportation industry is wary of claims, and rightly so. For many years now, the promise of fingerprint biometrics has not been fully realized in large part because conventional technologies did not perform well in the field, especially when users don’t have easy access to washroom facilities or when hard work roughens their hands.

Rugged and reliable multispectral imaging from Lumidigm has addressed all of these problems and is currently the most reliable solution in the transportation industry. Knowing who is operating a vehicle is now a realistic opportunity for fleet managers. Finally, it is possible to manage risk and reduce costs by ensuring that only properly trained, insured and authorized workers are driving and servicing vehicles.
