Extreme Environmental Conditions
Traditional fingerprint readers work in limited environmental conditions. Environmentally robust, Lumidigm’s multispectral imaging sensors are ideal for extreme environmental situations that conventional sensors can’t handle.
Wet conditions

Water (rain or sweat, for example), ambient light, dryness, and dirty fingers will not prevent Lumidigm’s multispectral imaging system from working because direct contact with the sensor is not required! This multispectral imaging feature differentiates the Lumidigm technology from all the other touch-based systems. It permits the sensor to work on dry skin or to see beyond “normal” city grime. It also means Lumidigm sensors will stand up to and improve the efficiency of high-throughput use. The image illustrates two “extreme” conditions to make the point. The image set on the left is from both a TIR and a Lumidigm sensor where the finger has no contact with the sensor. The second image set is from a TIR and a Lumidigm sensor where the finger is submerged in a pool of water. In both cases the multispectral imaging system from Lumidigm works perfectly.
Direct sunlight

Direct sunlight negatively impacts the performance of many fingerprint sensors, but the multispectral imaging system can be designed to be used reliably in outdoor environments. Lumidigm’s sensors perform extremely well in outdoor testing trials.
The figure at the right shows images captured in direct sunlight by both a conventional fingerprint sensor and a Lumidigm sensor in exactly the same conditions. Independent third-party testing of our Sunflood multispectral imaging prototype saw little to no degradation in performance when tested in a full-sun environment.
Indoor/Outdoor Functionality
The range of conditions where the Lumidigm system works well makes implementation in outdoor ATMs, theme park entries, or even portable military field instruments practical. Other fingerprint technologies cannot operate with the same versatility as Lumidigm’s revolutionary multispectral imaging technology.
